A court in central Turkey is hearing testimony as the trial beings of 16 suspects over a mining disaster last year in which 18 men died. The workers were trapped in a flooded coal mine last October after a water pipe exploded in Ermenek, Karaman province, some 400 kilometers (248 miles) south of the capital, Ankara. Rescue teams had to work for 38 days to recover the bodies. Monday saw the first day of the trial in Ermenek of 16 defendants in connection with the disaster -- including mining company owner Saffet Uyar, mining permit holder Abdullah Ozbey and engineering supervisor Ali Kurt. Fourteen of the suspects, including operating manager Yavuz Ozsoy and mining company manager Mehmet Zeybek, are being tried on charges of 'causing death of more than one individual with conscious negligence'. Mining engineer supervisor Kurt also appeared before the court on charges of 'forging private documents' as did mine worker Naci Ozsoy. According to an expert report, the men’s deaths were caused by a massive flood which was "definitely not a natural disaster". The bill of indictment claims the company avoided an inspection with a ‘fake’ invoice worth $20,000. The trial continues.

This historic film shows techniques used to conduct deep ocean mining of the sea floor, which were pioneered in the 1960s. The potential for this type of mining (particularly of manganese nodules) was never fully realized. Ironically, the program did end up providing the cover for the USNS Hughes Glomar Explorer (T-AG-193), a deep-sea drillship platform built for the United States Central Intelligence Agency Special Activities Division secret operation Project Azorian to recover the sunken Soviet submarine K-129, lost in April 1968. Hughes Glomar Explorer (HGE), as the ship was called at the time, was built between 1973 and 1974, by Sun Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. for more than US$350 million at the direction of Howard Hughes for use by his company, Global Marine Development Inc.[4] This is equivalent to $1.67 billion in present-day terms.[5] She set sail on 20 June 1974. Hughes told the media that the ship's purpose was to extract manganese nodules from the ocean floor. This marine geology cover story became surprisingly influential, spurring many others to examine the idea. But in sworn testimony in United States district court proceedings and in appearances before government agencies, Global Marine executives and others associated with Hughes Glomar Explorer project unanimously maintained that the ship could not be used in any economically viable ocean mineral operation. This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD. For more information visit http://www.PeriscopeFilm.com

Skyharbour Resources (TSXV:SYH) President and CEO Jordan Trimble gave a company presentation and participated in two panels at the recent International Metal Writers Conference in Vancouver. In the midst of a busy conference, Trimble took some time to talk to the Investing News Network about Skyharbour’s uranium and thorium exploration projects in Saskatchewan’s Athabasca Basin. Skyharbour has interests in five projects covering over 250,000 hectares. In June last year, the firm secured an option to buy Denison Mines’ (TSX:DML,NYSEMKT:DNN) Moore Lake uranium project on the southeastern side of the Athabasca Basin. Trimble said results of the company’s winter drill program revealed 21 percent U308 over a meter and a half, plus “a high-grade pod” with 9 percent U308 over a meter and a half. He also said Skyharbour is fully funded for its summer 2017 and January to March 2018 drill programs. In March, the company reached option agreements with Areva (EPA:AREVA) and Azincourt Uranium (TSXV:AAZ) to advance exploration at the Preston uranium project. Trimble said he believes the uranium market has reached its bottom, and that most analysts predict the price will have to hit $55 to $65 a pound to incentivize new production to come online. He explained that new larger reactors are being built that require more uranium to operate, and nuclear utilities will need to renew their supply contracts in the next few years. He added that nuclear energy is really the only source of electricity that provides 24/7 base load power with zero carbon emissions, and said it can be part of the solution to the air-quality issues various countries are facing. http://investingnews.com/daily/resource-investing/energy-investing/uranium-investing/jordan-trimble-uranium-market-recovery/ ________________________________________________________________ Investing News Network (INN) Find out more about investing by INN @ http://investingnews.com/ Want a FREE investor kit? Fastow and his wife, Lea, both pleaded guilty to charges against them. Fastow was initially charged with 98 counts of fraud, money laundering, insider trading, and conspiracy, among other crimes. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1118549570/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1118549570&linkCode=as2&tag=doc06-20&linkId=0148c85007099c1707b2bf91b671f974 Fastow pleaded guilty to two charges of conspiracy and was sentenced to ten years with no parole in a plea bargain to testify against Lay, Skilling, and Causey.[133] Lea was indicted on six felony counts, but prosecutors later dismissed them in favor of a single misdemeanor tax charge. Lea was sentenced to one year for helping her husband hide income from the government.[134] Lay and Skilling went on trial for their part in the Enron scandal in January 2006. The 53-count, 65-page indictment covers a broad range of financial crimes, including bank fraud, making false statements to banks and auditors, securities fraud, wire fraud, money laundering, conspiracy, and insider trading. United States District Judge Sim Lake had previously denied motions by the defendants to have separate trials and to relocate the case out of Houston, where the defendants argued the negative publicity concerning Enron's demise would make it impossible to get a fair trial. On May 25, 2006, the jury in the Lay and Skilling trial returned its verdicts. Skilling was convicted of 19 of 28 counts of securities fraud and wire fraud and acquitted on the remaining nine, including charges of insider trading. He was sentenced to 24 years and 4 months in prison.[135] In 2013 the United States Department of Justice reached a deal with Skilling, which resulted in ten years being cut from his sentence.[136] Lay pleaded not guilty to the eleven criminal charges, and claimed that he was misled by those around him. He attributed the main cause for the company's demise to Fastow.[137] Lay was convicted of all six counts of securities and wire fraud for which he had been tried, and he was subject to a maximum total sentence of 45 years in prison.[138] However, before sentencing was scheduled, Lay died on July 5, 2006. At the time of his death, the SEC had been seeking more than $90 million from Lay in addition to civil fines. The case of Lay's wife, Linda, is a difficult one. She sold roughly 500,000 shares of Enron ten minutes to thirty minutes before the information that Enron was collapsing went public on November 28, 2001.[139] Linda was never charged with any of the events related to Enron.[140] Although Michael Kopper worked at Enron for more than seven years, Lay did not know of Kopper even after the company's bankruptcy. Kopper was able to keep his name anonymous in the entire affair.[141] Kopper was the first Enron executive to plead guilty.[142] Chief Accounting Officer Rick Causey was indicted with six felony charges for disguising Enron's financial condition during his tenure. After pleading not guilty, he later switched to guilty and was sentenced to seven years in prison. All told, sixteen people pleaded guilty for crimes committed at the company, and five others, including four former Merrill Lynch employees, were found guilty. Eight former Enron executives testified—the main witness being Fastow—against Lay and Skilling, his former bosses. Another was Kenneth Rice, the former chief of Enron Corp.'s high-speed Internet unit, who cooperated and whose testimony helped convict Skilling and Lay. In June 2007, he received a 27-month sentence. Michael W. Krautz, a former Enron accountant, was among the accused who was acquitted of charges related to the scandal. Represented by Barry Pollack, Krautz was acquitted of federal criminal fraud charges after a month-long jury trial. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enron_scandal
